There was a lot of heavy looking forearms and high fiving going on in front of the Booking Desk today. I cant remember the last time I had so many Citation forms filled out. After fishing some offshore quite a few of the offshore boats came inshore to get in on the Cobia action. Some of the offshore boats had some really good Yellowfin catches. There were a few Dolphin caught too. But the Cobia fishing was really explosive. Countless fish over 40 pounds were brought in to the marina today. I spoke with one of the inshore guys halfway into his trip and they had already limited out on Cobia. Then they ran to fish a wreck to put some icing on the cake. They finished the day off with a limit of huge Black Sea Bass. Some of the Bass were in the 6 pound Class!! They also had an 11 pound Tautaug. That was a really impressive looking catch at the dock. A Sailfish was spotted on that trip just seven miles off the beach!
This wave of high pressure and beautiful water that has pushed up the coast is holding so much life right now. I really hope things remain this way for at least a few weeks. To give you an idea of the diversity of life we had some folks from Duke University charter a boat at the beginning of the week to study some whales in the area. They had a lot of success finding them. Just outside the inlet were Sperm Whales, Right Whales, and Humpbacks. Ironically the day before they came here, a Humpback was seen chasing Menhaden up onto the Shoals outside the inlet.
Trout catches continue to be really good. Some mornings despite the conditions, they dont feed to midday and then some morning you can catch them on every cast right at sunrise. This last fall 90% of the Trout caught were 13-16" and this spring 90% of them are 17"-19". That’s one of the upsides to having such a mild winter. The sound charters here have really honed in on them though. It’s rare that they don’t get their limit when targeting them.
There are still a few spots open on charters for offshore and inshore trips. Truly right now is an exeptionally rare oppurtunity to catch giant Cobia. Call us at 1-800-367-4728 or visit us at staging.pcdev.flywheelsites.com and we will take care of the rest.
