It looks like this entire week is shaping up to be one to remember. Every day has been beautiful with sunny skies and light winds. Based on the forecast, it looks like more of the same for the next week. Today’s Offshore catches were not as good as they have been. The large catches of Yellowfin Tuna were strangely absent after a phenomenal week of good catches. One can only speculate on the millions of factors that determine why some days are better than others. Most boats did catch Tuna and Dolphin. But the numbers just weren’t what they have been. Most of the offshore guys mixed it up after fishing for Pelegics and gave their crews an opportunity to catch some nice Tile Fish and Black Sea Bass. That way everyone had an oppurtunity to fill their coolers with a lot of good eating fish. You truly couldn’t have asked for a better day to fish though. Winds were light and from the south. Tomorrow we have quite a few heading offshore with more good weather so I feel confident they will do well tomorrow.
Inshore the Cobia have really started to show up in large numbers. One of our inshore Captains went specifically targeting trophy sized Cobia. I talked to him about 2/3 through his trip and they had one trophy sized fish in the boat. He said they had seen more fish in the 33" to 40" class than he could count. If you’ve never had the oppurtunity to sight fish for large Cobia, you should probably add it to your bucket list. Fishing for Cobia combines all the excitement of hunting with the trill of catching giant fish. Their brown coloration contrasts pretty dramatically with the clear water. The basic strategy is to locate them swimmimg near the surface then attempt to get a casted lure in their path. Pound for pound they are one of the toughest fighting fish in the ocean (not to mention best tasting.) We are fortunate to have some of the most experienced Cobia guides in the business in our inshore fleet. One of them is the world record holder on a charter he had out of here a few years back.
After the front came through last Friday the Speckled trout fishing had really slowed. It was a shame because it would be an understatement to say the fishing had been red hot! The thinking had been that, after last Wednesday night’s full moon, the larger females had began to spawn heavily that night. That in turn lead to them needing to feed heavily the next morning. But Mother Nature decided to bring in a cold front Friday afternoon sending them back to deeper water till it past. This morning they showed back up in good numbers feeding heavily leading to some really nice catches. I hope to hear of more Puppy Drum catches in the next week. They haven’t made a showing like the Trout have this year although at times there have been some caught.
