Today we finally had some Offshore boats venture out! The Forecast called for the wind to begin laying down this evening and we had some Captains and Anglers that wanted to be on the water the moment the fishing was possible. It’s funny how good the fishing has been for them. I just got off the phone with a Captain who said, "we ONLY got 14 tuna today!" You got to love comments like that. We only had a small number of boats fish Offshore today though. The ones that did fish did well on Yellowfin Tuna and some scattered Dolphin. One boat had two really nice Bigeye both just under 200 pounds. Several massive Bigeyes were caught on private boats out of Pirates Cove today too. All the Offshore guys got in relatively early including the one that spent half the day fighting giant Bigeyes. The latter half of this week promises to be a really busy one. There are only a few boats available and I’m pretty certain they will be filled quickly.
The Nearshore fleet continued to catch limits of Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish. There was a window, when it got so windy, that the Mackerel fishing slowed some. Today the fishing picked up again for them. Cobia were here in big numbers for a time about two weeks ago. They had been spotted sporadically since with some really large ones being caught on some days. There were still reports of large groups of Cobia to the South of us recently. Leading us to believe there would be some hot days in the near future with good numbers still having not made their trip to the Chesapeake to spawn. Today quite a few Cobia were spotted but none were hooked and landed unfortunately. All the conditions are right for King Mackerel to make a strong showing this year including large schools of Menhaden. Hopefully they will start to show up in the Near shore fleets catches very soon.
The sound fishing today was good with almost a limit of Speckled Trout caught along with some trowback Flounder. Some larger Flounder have been reported lately and there should be many more caught especially by those specifically targetting them with large live baits.
